One-Line Poem Group Gallery Show
(updated 10/6/03)
Paperwork, Deadlines and Schedules
Concept:
I do a form of writing that I think works well when it’s incorporated into a piece of visual art. Over the years, I have met artists who have connected with the one-line poems and wished to use them into their work, and the response has been so positive that I wanted to go a step further to make more artists aware of them and make them widely available for use.
The project detailed below would give artists who used the one-line poems an opportunity to exhibit their pieces in a group show with other artists who have done the same.
Call For Artists:
I am looking for visual artists who will take a one-line poem from the (love open hand) collection and use the text in an original work of visual art. The collection of poems has been contributed to the public domain, which means they can be used by anyone, at any time, without permission or royalties.
Originally, I wanted to require that the text would be somewhere in the actual work, not just a visual interpretation of the poem. But I have loosened up on this idea, and accept work that uses the poem just as the title of the piece, or work that is inspired by the poem. Typographical interpretations are also welcome, meaning the text of the poem without a "graphic" per se. I would especially welcome book and paper artists, or any bookmakers who wish to bind the collection as an original work of book-sculpture. The exhibit will take place in Chicago, and local artists are strongly encouraged to contribute.
It is possible that more than one artist will do the same poem for the show. The idea that no artist would get "dibs" on a poem incorporates my philosophy of "Open Art"; releasing a collection of work without any copyrights or restrictions on their use.
Artists (with permission) will be included in the “Participating Artist” page of the site, and the site will be used to publicize the show and highlight the work of the contributing artists.
It is expected that artists will be selling their work at the show. Financial arrangements will be made between the artist, gallery and buyer. I will disclose all financial agreements that are made if space is rented. I feel this exhibit is an opportunity to promote myself as an artist and celebrate collaboration, and my only financial aspiration will be to cover costs. Artists will NOT be charged any fees of any kind to submit or contribute to the show.
The working title of the show is The One-Line Collective.
Limitations:
1. Just to simplify things for the first show, I would like to limit the work to sculptures, simple installations, and work that can be hung on a wall. I would rather not work with music, live performance or video. If you have questions or comments about this, feel free to contact me.
2. I ask that no more than ten poems be used in any single piece. However, artists may submit more than one piece. This does not apply to bookmakers binding the (love open hand) collection.
3. The One-Line Collective will feature the 38 poems contained in the (love open hand) [I added non-.pdf version] poetry collection. It has been asked if other poems can be used. Because of the limitations on space at this time, I will be only considering work that utilizes this collection.
Submissions:
Works can be submitted for selection to the show via email or slides through regular mail. Works in progress or concepts for installations will also be accepted. If the work isn’t shown in The One-Line Collective exhibit, you are always welcome to sell the piece elsewhere at any time - it's your artwork.
The Show Space:
I currently have an offer to exhibit in a new gallery that has not yet opened, it is possible that we could be the maiden exhibit for this new venue. As soon as the space is solidified, I will post it to this site. I will also include information about the marketing and promotion of the show.

I would love to hear from people who have visited the site and have any opinion about what they have read. Although some of the above may sound like a very impersonal process, it really won’t be. I look forward to meeting and working with all the artists involved, and to always remain flexible and respectful of people's artistic processes. I believe this could really be one of the most exciting and original shows to hit the scene in quite a while. I can be reached at kathryn@diamondlifecafe.com or call 312-601-6514.
